Integrated ATPL

The "Zero to Hero" full-time course.

Integrated training is an intensive, full-time course designed to take you from zero flying experience to a frozen ATPL in approximately 18-24 months. You train with a single Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and wear a uniform from day one.

Key Features

Structure: Highly regimented schedule (Monday-Friday).
Cost: Typically £80,000 - £120,000 (often required upfront or in large installments).
Location: Often involves living on campus or moving abroad for fair-weather flying phases.
Airline Links: Many large ATOs have relationships with airlines, sometimes offering "tagged" courses.

Pros

Fastest route; immersive environment; preferred by some legacy carriers; networking opportunities.

Cons

Most expensive; rigid schedule (hard to work alongside); high financial risk if the school fails.

Traditional Modular

Pay as you go. Fly when you can.

Modular training involves completing your licenses (PPL, ATPL Theory, CPL, ME/IR) step-by-step, often at different schools and at your own pace. You are in complete control of the timeline.

Key Features

Flexibility: Keep your day job and fly on weekends or holidays.
Cost: Typically £65,000 - £90,000 (Spread over several years).
Choice: Pick the best school for each phase (e.g., do PPL locally, do CPL ME/IR at a large flight school).
Experience: Often results in slightly higher total flight hours upon qualification.

Pros

Cheapest route; zero financial risk (pay per hour); build life experience alongside training.

Cons

Takes longer; requires massive self-discipline; lack of "campus" camaraderie; administration is your responsibility.

Note: While this is a common and effective order, modular training offers flexibility to rearrange some steps (e.g., ATPL Theory can be started during Hours Building).

1. PPL & Night Rating

Private Pilot Licence + Night qualification. Often done at a local aerodrome.

2. Hours Building

Solo flying to reach the 150 hours required to start the CPL course.

3. ATPL Theory Exams

13 written exams. Can be done via distance learning alongside hours building.

4. CPL + ME/IR

Commercial Pilot Licence + Multi-Engine Instrument Rating. Must be completed at the same ATO.

5. MCC / APS MCC

Multi-Crew Cooperation. Learning to work as a team in a jet simulator.

6. A-UPRT

Advanced Upset Prevention & Recovery Training. Mandatory before first type rating.

Structured Modular

The middle ground.

Structured Modular (sometimes called "Fast Track Modular") allows you to complete the modular syllabus but under the umbrella of one flight school. They organize the schedule for you, providing the continuity of Integrated with the cost benefits of Modular.

Key Features

Continuity: You typically stay with one provider for CPL, IR, and MCC.
Cost: Typically £70,000 - £100,000.
Support: You get the admin support and student services of a big school.

Pros

Good compromise on cost/speed; recognized by airlines as "structured"; supportive environment.

Cons

More expensive than pure modular; less flexible on timeline than pure modular.

MPL (Multi-Crew Pilot Licence)

Train for a specific seat.

The MPL is a newer license type designed specifically for airlines. Unlike the ATPL, which focuses on single-pilot skills first, the MPL puts you in a multi-crew simulator environment very early on. You are usually tagged to a specific airline (e.g., EasyJet) from day one.

Key Features

Simulator Heavy: Much less time in light aircraft (Cessna/Piper), much more time in A320/B737 sims.
Restricted: The license is initially tied to that specific airline. If they go bust or rescind the offer, you cannot easily fly for anyone else without conversion training.
Cost: £100,000+ (Similar to Integrated).

Pros

Direct line to a job; highly relevant training for airline ops; airline mentorship.

Cons

The "Golden Handcuffs" - you are locked to one employer; less "real" flying experience; high financial risk.
